Harnessing data insights to help insurers navigate today and lead tomorrow

ANALYSIS AND INSIGHT FOR THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY AND BEYOND

Insurers could play a key role in minimising road risks by analysing data and encouraging safer driving habits

Sarah Vaughan was thrilled to join James Luckhurst on the ProjectEDWARD podcast to discuss how the industry can deeply engage with road safety issues.

Did you know night time driving increases collision fatalities by 80% due to reduced visibility and glare? Plus, airport-area road collisions are twice the national average, often due to unfamiliarity, stress, and fatigue. Heathrow ranks as the riskiest airport with 4.2 injury-causing collisions per 1,000 people every year, meaning that roads near this airport have 2.4 times the national risk. With the Labour government supporting expansion plans for a new runway at Heathrow the traffic and driving pressures around these roads are only likely to increase.

To enhance road safety, we need better data sharing and collaboration among insurers, drivers, and policymakers, alongside education on the dangers of speed, fatigue, and distraction. The podcast delves into the link between speed limits and fatality rates in different lighting conditions and emphasises the importance of equipping all relevant organisations with the tools to reduce road risks.
